I specialise in Withof and Floral Bedfordshire laces. Both laces allow the lacemaker freedom to interpret the lace.
Withof, a Dutch lace that evolved from Duchesse lace, was first made in 1985. It incorporates stylized floral patterns with each motif defined by a technique known as ‘rolling’. One motif smoothly follows another, giving a lovely flowing line to the design as a whole.
Floral Bedfordshire is the most modern of the English traditional laces. It developed from Maltese lace shown at the 1851 Great Exhibition. The natural flowing lines of the lace give it a beautiful, expressive shape. The structure of individual petals and fronds produce realistic flowers and leaves that are recognisable in the lace.
While living in the Far East, I became fascinated
by Asian motifs and began to incorporate them in my designs. This led to the
development of new techniques necessary to express the three dimensional
effects that the new designs required. It also led to combining Withof and Floral
Bedfordshire.
